Carney and Sheinbaum Meet at G7 to Strengthen North American Ties
2025-06-27 During the recent G7 summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The meeting, which took place on June 17, 2025, focused on strengthening the long-standing economic relationship between their two nations and enhancing cooperation on shared priorities within the G7 framework. The leaders discussed the close economic integration that benefits both Canadian and Mexican workers and businesses, as well as crucial issues like economic and energy security and the creation of resilient supply chains. The meeting also provided an opportunity for President Sheinbaum to present "Plan México," her administration's signature project aimed at elevating Mexico's economy to a global top 10 position, and to court Canadian business leaders. Mexico is not a G7 member but was invited to attend the summit by Prime Minister Carney, an invitation extended to foster dialogue on North American trade and economic matters.
In a friendly gesture, President Sheinbaum gifted Prime Minister Carney a soccer ball decorated with Wixárika indigenous art, in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Is Oxxo expanding to Canada?
2025-06-13 A viral TikTok video showcasing an Oxxo store in Canada has sparked a debate about its authenticity. While the store features a logo nearly identical to the well-known Mexican chain, with the addition of "CA," and is reportedly registered with Canadian authorities, it is unclear if it is an official branch. Femsa, the parent company of Oxxo, has not released any statement to confirm the opening of a store in Canada, leaving social media users to speculate whether this is a legitimate expansion or a case of brand plagiarism.

Mexico Takes Legal Action Over MrBeast Video Filmed at Mayan Ruins
2025-05-19 Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is pursuing legal action against Full Circle Media, a production company that collaborated with popular YouTuber MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) on a video filmed at ancient Mayan archaeological sites. The core of the dispute lies in the alleged unauthorized commercial use of these heritage sites and the presentation of potentially misleading information in the video titled "I Explored 2000 Year Old Ancient Temples."
The Mexican government contends that while permission was granted to film at locations including Chichén Itzá and Calakmul, this did not extend to using the sites for commercial promotion or advertising MrBeast's products, such as his chocolate brand, which was described in the video as "Mayan-approved."
Furthermore, Mexican authorities have raised concerns about certain assertions made in the video, including claims of accessing areas not typically open to archaeologists and depictions of activities like using drones in restricted zones and handling ancient artifacts, some of which INAH suggests were added in post-production or were false.
The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the Secretary of Culture have voiced their disapproval, emphasizing that while they welcome the promotion of Mexico's cultural heritage, they condemn the exploitation of these sites for private profit and the distortion of their value. INAH is reportedly seeking compensation and an apology.
Representatives for MrBeast have denied filming any advertisement material directly on the archaeological sites overseen by INAH. They stated the video was intended to highlight the treasured Mayan sites and expressed regret that the situation has become a political issue, hoping for a productive dialogue that encourages tourism to these historical locations.
The lawsuit is specifically targeting the production company, Full Circle Media, for allegedly violating the terms of the filming permit. The situation has sparked considerable public discussion in Mexico regarding access to and the commercial use of its significant cultural and historical landmarks.

Mexico's Legal Action Against Google Over Gulf Naming Dispute
2025-05-12 Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has initiated a lawsuit against Google due to the company's decision to display "Gulf of America" on its maps for U.S. users, following an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump. Mexico's contention is that while the "Gulf of America" label might be acceptable for the portion of the Gulf within U.S. territorial waters, the name "Gulf of Mexico" should remain for the regions bordering Mexico and Cuba. Sheinbaum argues that Google's current mapping presentation, which applies "Gulf of America" to the entire body of water for U.S. users, infringes on Mexico's territorial rights and historical naming conventions. This legal action underscores a dispute over geographical nomenclature and national sovereignty, highlighting the tensions that can arise from differing national policies and the global reach of digital mapping services.

Canelo Alvarez Defeats William Scull via UD
2025-05-05 Canelo Alvarez defeated William Scull by unanimous decision on May 3, 2025, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, successfully defending his super-middleweight titles. However, the fight was largely considered underwhelming, with Scull often evading and Canelo landing mostly body shots in a bout described by some as a "sleepy victory." While Canelo secured the win, the fight lacked the excitement of his previous match against Jaime Munguia, where a more engaging exchange led to greater praise, and even his fight against John Ryder, where Ryder's toughness became a key talking point.
